Jupiter Poppet

Author: Esmerelda Jones

Fabric sewn doll shaped for your hand. Personally embellished by the "I see" of your soul. Hold Jupiter Poppet out to the sun (male/fire) in thankfulness for the magnificent golden energy. If you're a Sagittarian (also male/fire) you must have him for your fire-spirit altar (the direction of south) and dance with the mask of the salamander.

Royal Purple cotton or linen fabric A4 size, folded over
Cotton thread
Wool filling
Beads for two arms (optional)
Cotton quilting thread if using bead arms
Secret Scroll
Glass beads, ornaments, charms
Essential oils (pure) of basil and mint
Project used linen with handmade clay beads for hair design

On a Thursday or Sagittarian phase of the moon, wash fabric in natural soap. Rinse in rosemary water, dwelling on wisdom. Dry in brilliant sunlight. Prepare tiny secret scroll.

Iron fabric smooth, straightening the grainline. Place fabric right sides together and pin body pattern (image below) plus two arms (one in reverse) onto it. The arm pieces are optional; you may want to make bead arms instead. Carefully trace around shapes with pencil. Using a short machine stitch, sew twice around body and arms, leaving space for turning. Trim seams, clip and turn with the aid of a doll tool or knitting needle. Work gently around the seamline, pushing out all fabric without poking through or tearing. Fill firmly with stuffing, shaping poppet as you go. Insert secret scroll. Place a few drops of the essential oils in with the stuffing. Sew openings closed with invisible, secure stitches. Attach arms following angle. If you chose bead arms, sew them on now going across the body several times from arm to arm with quilting thread.

Finish Jupiter poppet by decorating with signs of fortune and prosperity. Jupiter is the ruling planet of the sun sign Sagittarius. It is a jovial, generous planet and responds immediately to full-hearted magick. Colours are royal blue and purple, also green jewels or gold coins as money symbols. Write your own personal fortune spell and perform it deliberately, word for word as you light a blue-violet candle beside a deep green one. Do this at anytime you feel the need for something swelling and bursting in your life concerning fortune. (Thursday is the day for celebrating Jupiter/Sagittarius). Compliment Jupiter with the Sun (purple and gold) for strong backup in spellwork. Accentuate the fire aspect by employing red, ginger, chilli.

Historical Note: English children called their dolls poppets.

Sagittarius Hagrid

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the most giant planet in our whole solar system. Jupiter is 1300 times the size of Earth and weighs twice as much as all the other planets combined. Thus the half-giant Hagrid could only be Sagittarius! His birthday is December 6. Rowling has given him Sadge's other defining characteristics too... he is kind, innocent, open, and just a bit irresponsible. Plus he has a yen for crossbreeds (Sagittarius itself is half horse, half-man), fun and ale.

Sagittarius is a fire sign and thus impulsive. Like the centaur charging happily forward, Hagrid can be indiscreet and foolhardy trying to raise a baby dragon and illegally creating a dangerous crossbreed he named the Blast-Ended Skrewt are two examples but we can't help but love the jolly giant!

Behind-the-scenes Sagittarius Muggles: Kenneth Branagh who plays Professor Lockhart, Gemma Jones who plays Madame Pomfrey, Alfred Enoch who plays Dean Thomas, Prisoner ofAzakaban director Alfonso Cuaron and many of the risk-taking stunt doubles!
